Happy New Year for PCs
Naysayers would have pronounced the death of traditional PC, market analysts would like to differ. Researcher Gartner, for instance, says in its preliminary findings that the worldwide PC shipments totaled 71.1 million units in the first quarter of 2008, a 12.3% increase from the first quarter of 2007. Not bad.
With 12.9 million units, Hewlett-Packard extended its lead during the first quarter of 2008, as its worldwide market share increased to 18.3%, compared to a year ago. At No. 2, Dell registered its second consecutive quarter of double-digit (14.9%) growth in the worldwide market by selling 10.5 million machines. Acer (6.7 million), Lenovo (4.7 million), and Toshiba (3.0 million) come at 3rd, 4th, and 5th positions in the Gartner rankings.
The data covers desk-based PCs, mobile PCs, and X86 servers.
